Cosy Evenings are on their way…

| 25th September 2025
The shorter days, with the occasional need for a jumper, points to cosy evenings around the fire, cheese and wine with a movie and homemade bread and soup. Here at Hen Corner, with our winter squash curing and our sourdough starter well fed, we’ve got it all…

Yes, I made all those cheeses in the photo above and there’s still time for you to make your own mould ripened blue cheese on Making New Cheeses next Wednesday 1st October and craft your own camembert on Introduction to Making Cheese on Wednesday 12th November. Come and join us and take home your fabulous creations to enjoy for supper.

As September starts with harvesting grapes and ends with gathering fallen feathers from chickens, who are moulting as they grow their new winter plumes, we are looking forward to welcoming families to meet our flock, resplendent in their new season attire, at Family Feathers & Fun Saturday 4th October. Do you know a little one who would like to hug a hen?

With our honey stored safely in jars, honey comb in tubs and candles on the shelf, we are all set for customers who want to buy unique gifts for special friends and family. I’ve started preparing the bees for winter and am ensuring that they have enough food to see them through the months when it’s too cold for them to fly.

It was rather surreal, a few weeks ago, to spend the day dressed in sequins for The Big Christmas Press Show, but all part of the preparations for a very special new event.

I’m delighted to announce that I’m working with the Ideal Home Show Christmas at Kensington Olympia 26th -30th November. I’ll be hosting the Christmas Corner, giving demonstrations throughout each day encouraging guests to create sustainable gifts and decorations.

Subscribers can book special £10 tickets by using code: IHSXSARA when you book in here.

I’m a firm believer in planning ahead, and as we all know – ‘If you snooze, you lose’ so I’m giving you the news as soon as it comes in to help you gather friends for the best festive activities.

Some of our Christmas Courses are already close to selling out and we’ll try to squeeze in an extra couple of sessions for the very popular Making Christmas Wreaths and Introduction to Christmas Baking.

A top date for your diary is Chiswick Flower Market on Sunday 7th December where I’ll be running my ever popular Christmas Wreaths workshops.

This year, they will be held at the beautiful Room2 Chiswick Hometel on Windmill Road, and due to demand we are running two sessions this year 12-1.30pm and 2-3.30pm. For tickets check both Chiswick Flower Market and Hen Corner websites, bookings open soon.

Other news:
  • Butternut is still living in our house! She doesn’t seem distressed or in pain – just struggling to see properly…
  • The Eco Garden that I manage helped our local church win a sustainability award last night
  • I really enjoyed this week’s visit to a London Synagogue, I brought bees and honey and we focussed on celebrating Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year

Jobs for the week:

  • Refine some beeswax for this year’s candles
  • Order gallons more milk for another cheese course – that’s three weeks in a row, I wonder what the milkman thinks?
  • Make a cake for Family Feathers & Fun next Saturday 4th October

The changing seasons bring new opportunities and fresh responsibilities – and I love it!

I hope to see you soon,

Sara
