It was great to be back at @syonparkofficial for t It was great to be back at @syonparkofficial for their annual School’s Day with @countrysidelearning 🐓🐓🐓
We worked with 10 groups of 30 throughout the day, talking about the smallholding that would have been in the grounds to feed everyone that lived and worked in the house and estate.
We looked at the joys and responsibilities of looking after chickens and all 300 pupils had a soft stroke of a hen 🐓🐓🐓
Today, on #WorldBeeDay, in a community workshop in Today, on #WorldBeeDay, in a community workshop in @brentfordecogarden we talked about the wide variety of bees throughout the world and looked for as many varieties as possible foraging in the wildlife area. Back at home, I merged a weak queenless honeybee colony with a strong colony and was down from 9 colonies to 8 for just over an hour… Then I split my largest colony to prevent them from swarming, so I’m back up to 9.
I was self controlled and declined the opportunities to collect two more swarms today, one from a friend’s garden and one up the road in Chiswick. But I ensured that other bee keepers collected and re-hived them.
Bees are so vital both as pollinators and contributors to our ecosystems. Honeybees are just one of 20,000 species of bees worldwide, most honeybees have beekeepers to look after them, solitary bees, bumblebees and all the other species are the bees that need saving. Feed them by planting flowers, refresh them by providing shallow water with pebbles (so they don’t drown), protect them by avoiding pesticides and respect them by allowing them to forage freely.

Oh, and if you like honey, find your local bee keeper - it will bee amazing 🐝🐝🐝

Saturday 20th May is #WorldBeeDay 🐝 A time to a Saturday 20th May is #WorldBeeDay 🐝
A time to appreciate all the hard work that these busy pollinators do, contributing to so much of our food and beautiful flowers.
The honeybees that we keep at Hen Corner are just one type of bee amongst the 280 species throughout the UK (20,000 in the world). Respect bees, plant for pollinators and buy delicious honey from your local beekeeper!
