About Hen Corner

We are Hen Corner. We love the bee keepers, the veggie bed diggers, the jam makers and cider drinkers, the chicken fanciers and the real bread bakers. But not just in the deepest darkest countryside or the far, far away villages but right here in our cities and towns.

This morning the staff and students of @foxprimary in Kensington will arrive at school confident that they have honey bees back in their roof top garden!
We installed them yesterday and are supporting staff to manage them. I also enjoyed spending the morning with both Yr 5 classes and the school council talking all things bee….

They’ve been working hard to support their queen (as she lays around 2,000 eggs a day), rearing young, foraging for nectar & pollen, guarding the hive and they have just started filling their second box of honey!

Our little chicks are growing up so fast, feathers are filling out their wings and feet (a hallmark of Pékins), and they are more inquisitive by the day…

The fragile blossom of our Ukrainien Easter Pear, The fragile blossom of our Ukrainien Easter Pear, also known as the Humbug Pear as the mature fruit will be striped pink, yellow and green. It’s named Easter as in its native Ukraine, the fruits are harvested in autumn and stored safely over winter to be presented within Easter celebrations as a sign of new life and promise after the darkness of winter.
May Ukraine, in it’s current fragility, find hope that after darkness comes new life 🇺🇦

The eggs have been in the incubator for 17 days no The eggs have been in the incubator for 17 days now and, as bantams, should be hatching in the next couple of days.
We’ve just candled them, shining a light through them, to see what’s happening and, if I’m correct, there’s chicks developing in 9 of them (meaning 3 were not fertile).
Fingers crossed for safe hatchings 🤞🏻🤞🏻
