Have a Great Day, Y’all

| 22nd June 2026
Back last June, we hosted a special event for American homesteaders who were visiting the UK checking out how we keep chickens this side of the pond. A couple of the visitors, Rory & Rebecca Feek, invited us to visit their 100 acre farm in Columbia, Tennessee to join in The Homestead Festival that they’ve been hosting over recent years.

I’d never been to America before, so when Omlet contacted me to say:

We’re going to the festival in Tennessee, would you like to join the team?

I did a quick diary shuffle and booked my flight!

It was a great event and I felt right at home amongst the bee keepers, cheese makers, sourdough bakers and chicken keepers – I mean, chilling out in a field surrounded by hens is always my favourite past time, but meeting all the lovely guests (who each called me ma’am) was such a delight.

We stayed behind on the last evening of the festival for a Country Music Concert and on our day off we visited some local historical sites, and shopping malls (!). I tried Shrimp and Grits, BBQ Brisket and stopped by at the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville to check out the Dolly Parton exhibition and see Elvis’ gold-plated Cadillac.

  • We’ve adopted 10 new rescue chickens! Full story to come next month…
  • Our honeybee colonies having been growing and multiplying – I’ve now got 9 hives of bees
  • I’ve had a go at making Manchego Cheese – it’s looking great, but needs around 6 months to mature it, something for Christmas maybe?
Jobs for the week:
  • Plan out how to run a baking course in 36c heat
  • Plant out (and protect) the brassica seedlings at the allotment
  • Prepare for lots of school visits next week

Call me old fashioned, but I do like my winters to be cold and my summers to be hot – let’s see if I’m still saying that next month!

Are you enjoying this weather?

I hope to see you soon,

Sara
