There’s a crispness in the air here at Hen Corner.

There’s a crispness in the air here at Hen Corner. The mornings are misty, the hens are taking their time to come out of the coop, and then go to bed early, and the garden is starting to go quiet. But don’t be fooled – autumn is one of the most beautiful and rewarding seasons on our little urban smallholding. It’s a time of gathering in and of letting go. We harvest the last of what the summer has given us, tuck the soil up for winter and plant in faith for next year.

'There was some consternation in our house at the weekend when we were given quinces from a friend’s allotment. What to do with them? How to cook them? How even to cut them without slicing your fingers off (they’re really hard!). It turns out they’re very nice poached in apple juice with a baked ham.

For Sara Ward at Hen Corner, quinces are the final harvest of the year. She reckons they need cooking with sugar. They do have a considerably sharper in flavour than their orchard cousins apples and pears.'

Let’s Talk Ivy…
Clinging, climbing, creeping… ivy certainly knows how to make itself at home! It scrambles up walls, wraps itself around tree trunks and, left to its own devices, it can get a bit too much. I know the temptation this time of year – grab the secateurs and pull the lot down. But please, don’t cut it yet – wait a little longer!

Now is the time to save seeds and save money!
Parsnips left to flower look so beautiful and the dried flower heads yield loads of seeds for next year.
Parsnips can be fickle to germinate, but with this amount of seeds, I can sow more than I need and thin out to give them good space to grow.
